Grandma Elva’s Brave Battle

Sally and Max loved spending time with their Grandma Elva. She made the best cookies, told the funniest stories, and always gave the warmest hugs. But one day, things changed.
“Grandma has a sickness called brain cancer,” their mom explained. “It’s called glioblastoma, and it makes her feel very tired and sometimes forgetful.”
Sally and Max didn’t quite understand what brain cancer was, but they knew one thing for sure: they loved Grandma Elva, and they wanted to help her feel better.
The Plan to Help Grandma
“Grandma needs us,” Max said to Sally one afternoon as they played with their toys. “What can we do?”
Sally thought for a moment. “We can be her helpers! We’ll make her laugh, spend time with her, and remind her how much we love her.”
And that’s exactly what they did.
Max drew silly pictures of dogs wearing sunglasses, which always made Grandma Elva laugh. Sally read her favorite books out loud, even when Grandma felt too tired to talk. Together, they brought her tea and helped her water her plants on sunny days.
“Thank you, my little helpers,” Grandma Elva would say with a big smile. “You make my days so much brighter.”
Learning About Brain Cancer
One day, Grandma Elva explained her sickness to Sally and Max in a way they could understand.
“There’s something growing in my brain that shouldn’t be there,” she said gently. “The doctors are helping me fight it, but it’s a big battle. Some days I feel strong, and other days I feel tired. But your love gives me so much strength.”
Hearing this, Sally and Max decided they wanted to learn more about brain cancer so they could help even more. They asked their parents to look up information and found out that many people were working hard to find better treatments.
A Big Idea
“Max, what if we tell people about Grandma’s sickness?” Sally said one day. “Maybe they’ll want to help, too!”
Max’s eyes lit up. “We could make a story about Grandma and how brave she is!”
So, they did. Sally and Max drew pictures of Grandma Elva as a superhero with a cape, battling brain cancer with her team of helpers—her doctors, her family, and of course, Sally and Max. They shared their story with their friends at school and even made cards to give to Grandma’s doctors to thank them for their hard work.
A Lesson in Love and Bravery
Every day, Sally and Max learned more about what it meant to be brave. They saw how Grandma Elva faced her sickness with a smile, even on hard days. They realized that being brave didn’t mean never being scared—it meant doing your best, even when things were tough.
And even though Grandma Elva’s battle was hard, Sally and Max knew she wasn’t fighting alone. They were part of her team, helping her every step of the way.
The End of the Day
At night, before bed, Sally and Max would whisper a special promise to each other. “We’ll always be Grandma’s helpers,” they said. “And we’ll always remind her how much we love her.”
Grandma Elva smiled every time they told her how much they loved her, and that made her feel like a superhero every single day.
