To our Waterview families, friends, and neighbors:
The devastating floods that swept through Central Texas this month have shaken all of us. Our hearts go out to the families affected — especially those in Kerr County, where over 130 lives have been lost and many more are still missing. As a swim school, we know that water can be joyful and life-giving — but it can also be unpredictable and, at times, deadly.
That’s why we want to take a moment not only to honor those impacted by these floods but also to talk about the power of preparedness, the importance of swim education, and what we can all do to stay safe.
💧 Flood Waters Aren’t Just “Deep Puddles”
One of the most dangerous myths is that floods are slow or shallow. In reality:
- Just 6 inches of moving water can knock over an adult.
- 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles.
- And floodwaters often contain hidden currents, debris, sewage, and bacteria that make swimming nearly impossible — even for strong swimmers.
Flash floods like those we’ve seen this month are especially dangerous because they come with little to no warning and hit hardest overnight when most people are sleeping.
🛡️ Why Water Safety Still Matters
We teach swim lessons, yes. But what we really teach is respect for water — how to stay calm, how to float, how to survive when seconds count. And we believe these lessons are essential now more than ever.
Whether you’re heading to the lake, enjoying the backyard pool, or visiting loved ones in flood-prone areas, knowing how to swim — and how to respond — can save lives.
📣 What You Can Do Today
Here’s what we at Waterview Swim encourage every family to do:
✅ Talk to your kids about floods. Explain that flood water isn’t for playing. Even puddles can hide dangers like electric currents or open manholes.
✅ Practice emergency drills. Know your evacuation routes. Keep a go-bag. Include a whistle, flashlight, and dry clothes.
✅ Learn to float and tread water. We offer lessons for all ages, and this skill is vital during flash flood rescues.
✅ Stay alert. Sign up for city or county emergency alerts and weather warnings — especially if you live near creeks or low-lying areas.
✅ Avoid flooded roads. Never drive through water, no matter how shallow it seems.
🐯 From Ethan the Tiger & All of Us at Waterview Swim
Ethan (yes, the real Ethan behind the tiger!) and the rest of our instructor team are especially moved this season as we’ve seen first-time swimmers succeed in minutes — including many adults who swam on day one and a 4-year-old who swam solo on their very first lesson.
We’re proud of every student, but tragedies like these floods remind us why we do what we do. We’re not just teaching swimming — we’re building lifesaving confidence in the water.
💙 In Memory & In Action
To those grieving from the floods, we see you. We stand with you. And we’ll continue doing our part to ensure water safety is not a privilege, but a right. That starts with education, awareness, and action.
If you’d like to sponsor a swim lesson for a child in need, reach out to us directly — or visit WaterviewSwim.com to learn more about our Guarantee to Swim program.
Let’s turn heartbreak into purpose.
Stay safe,
The Waterview Swim Team
