The “Chlorine Smell” at Pools: What It Really Means
Most people think that a strong pool smell is a sign of a clean pool, but that’s actually not true. That chemical smell you notice when walking near a public pool isn’t pure chlorine… It’s a reaction. And it may be a sign that the pool is too dirty, not too clean.
What Causes the Strong Pool Smell?
The odor comes from chloramines—chemical compounds formed when chlorine mixes with body oils, sweat, urine, and other contaminants brought in by swimmers.
In simple terms:
Chlorine + Pee/Sweat = Chloramines (the strong smell)That “pool smell” is actually chlorine doing its job—but in a pool that may not be properly balanced or cleaned often enough.
What Strong Chloramine Smells Can Indicate:
- The pool may have high levels of contaminants
- Swimmers are not showering before getting in
- The pool needs to be shocked or treated to break down chloramines
- Indoor pools may have poor ventilation, making the smell stronger
