    Rip Tides

    16 Feb 2026 Water Safety

Swimming in rip currents can be dangerous, and it is important to know how to swim out of them safely. Here are some tips for swimming in rip tides:

    1. Stay Calm: The first thing you need to do if you get caught in a rip current is to stay calm. Don’t panic, as this can make the situation worse.
    2. Don’t Swim Against the Current: Trying to swim against a rip current can tire you out quickly, and it is unlikely that you will make any headway. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current.
    3. Swim Parallel to the Shore: Rip currents usually extend from the shore out to sea, so swimming parallel to the shore will take you out of the current. Once you are out of the current, you can swim back to shore.
    4. Float and Wait for Help: If you are unable to swim out of the rip current, try to stay afloat by floating on your back and waving for help. Lifeguards or other swimmers may be able to assist you.
    5. Be Prepared: It is important to be aware of the conditions before you go swimming. If there are rip currents, don’t swim alone and always swim near a lifeguard. If you are not a strong swimmer, consider taking swimming lessons or wearing a life jacket.

Remember that rip currents are a common occurrence in the ocean, and it is important to know how to swim out of them safely. If you are ever unsure about the conditions or your ability to swim in the ocean, it is best to stay out of the water.
