    Be Safe at the Lake

    16 Feb 2026 Water Safety

As Easter approaches, many people in Texas are looking forward to spending time outdoors, enjoying the warm weather and the beauty of nature. One popular destination for outdoor recreation is Lake Lewisville, located just north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. However, while swimming in the lake can be a great way to cool off and have fun, it’s important to be aware of the risks and take steps to stay safe.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when swimming in any body of water is that drowning can happen quickly and silently, even to strong swimmers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause for children ages 5 to 14. In addition, drowning can happen to people of all ages and skill levels.

To reduce the risk of drowning, it’s important to practice safe swimming habits. This includes things like wearing a life jacket when boating or swimming in deep water, staying within designated swimming areas, avoiding alcohol and drugs when swimming, and learning basic water safety and rescue skills. Taking swim lessons can also be a great way to improve your swimming ability and reduce your risk of drowning.

Unfortunately, despite these precautions, drownings still occur at Lake Lewisville and other bodies of water in Texas. In 2020, there were at least six drownings at Lake Lewisville, including one that involved a 15-year-old boy who was swimming with friends. In response, local officials have taken steps to improve safety at the lake, including increasing patrols and adding additional warning signs and safety equipment.

If you’re planning to swim at Lake Lewisville or any other body of water in Texas, it’s important to be aware of the risks and take steps to stay safe. This includes following posted safety guidelines, avoiding swimming alone, and always keeping an eye on children who are swimming. By being proactive about your safety and taking steps to reduce your risk of drowning, you can enjoy all the fun and beauty that Lake Lewisville has to offer without putting yourself or others in danger.

Please be safe, I know we chat all the time about swim lessons. Here is the rule, If you can’t swim, don’t get into or around the water WITHOUT a lifejacket.
